Crash and Burn 100k: Or a Tale of Two Crashes

Well Yesterday I pre rode my normal 100k loop through Bethlehem and Morris, just to see what I was in for. Well, for all the talk of climate change and mountains collapsing that wasn't the case out here. I managed to average 16.8mph yesterday before heading home and working a little on my paper, the sad thing is I really didn't eat alot that would prove to be the key today.

Crash # 1 Welcome to Bonksville Population Bob.

I met up with Bjoern and Josie at 11:00am and we started out on our 62 mile odyssey. The first 5 miles were mostly down hill but as we started to climb, something didn't feel quite right...Bjoern got around which was normal I held pace with Josie for about a mile and then got dropped....I sipped some more sports drink hoping it was only electrolytes, I had a small headache and was fighting hard to to keep the other two riders in sight. As we hit Nettlehollow Rd. it became apparent that I had no gas in the tank, my lack of eating any substantial meals in the past 48 hours ( I ate but little things, like cereal, some bananas, pop corn...all simple carbs.) definitely wrecked havoc on my body. We arrived at Lake Waramaug to find out that today was the day of the annual 50k/100k running festival so as we looped around we keeping left to allow the ultra runner types to battle through the 90F heat. We got to the State Park and I immediately raided my Bento Box 3 of the 4 power bars I brought with me were wolfed down in seconds along with a bottle of sports drink .

After getting our bearings set we decided to Press On I gave Bjoern and Josie the Warning that despite the food was helping that I was still going to be about 5 minutes back. And so we did our second loop of the lake and made our way out to the hills. As expected it didn't take long for me to go "off the back " and Bjoern and Josie to go out of sight. I sat in my own level of Dantes Inferno, literally the Heat was opressive, especially considering early this week I was walking around in long pants and a hoodie. Needless to Say Bjoern and Josie were holding good pace. They waited for me at the top of CT 61. After a quick regroup...and the comments "those hills are no joke." We began the descent back.
Crash# 2 Josie joins the "club."

This morning Josie made the comment that she had never been in a crash, well sadly that changed today, as we made our way down 61, she and Bjoern hit a small pot hole, Bjoern stood up right and I saw Josie eat pavement, luckily the car between us slowed to stop and help. Thankfully Josie was just a little cut up ( I'm always afraid that when anyone goes down they break something.) and bent the rear wheel of her P2C, the driver called for the Volunteer firefighters to take a look at her, figure clean out her scrapes a little better. Now I was figuring that just a small fly car would come out with a medic with a first aid kit...nope we got a whole 10 man rescue crew, an ambulance, rescue unit, and one volly who happended to be listening to his scanner. So after the whole shabang the good samaritan motorist drove Josie back to her car as Bjoern and I pressed on. I could go into the bloody gory details but I got smoked...

For me it was probably one of my worst days in the saddle in a long time, I just had nothing, but at least I learned one thing, you can't go 60 miles with nothing in the tank.

I have a paper due Wednesday..

and can you guess the weather forecast: Sunny, warm, with an incredibly light wind....
Alright papers haven't prevented me from training before so I just have to HTFU and get it done.

This week my training has been crap....I haven't swum in a week and my only activity has been a 10k I ran on an indoor track...on Tuesday. I guess I can chalk this up to being a rest week. Sadly my lack of exercise is taking itself out on my personality...I seem to be lacking testosterone, hopelessly crushing on some chick, just emotionally a mess, lacking all rationality, having the sudden urge to drink diet soda with a little umbrella in it...damn it I need to do something manly...and quick...before I start watching Sex and the City reruns and ordering Cosmos..oh wait I'm going to have to do that Saturday night ( have to visit a gay bar for a law class project and then write about what it's like to be a minority for a night.).

So in order to save my manly worth I'm going to do some decent training this weekend.

Tonight: an 8 miler followed by a 3000-4000 yard swim, followed by paper writing.

Saturday Morning Swim, Afternoon: a 70 miler and a 5-10k run brick followed by my night at a minority establishment, and paper writing.

Sunday: I'm going to be a heathen and skip mass and go for a Long ride then a long writing session.

My training mileage should start going up in a couple weeks as things start winding down at school...then begins the job hunt for a better paying gig or at least a couple of side gigs I've got debts to pay and dreams to plan for. Otherwise I may be auctioning a kidney on ebay...but we'll see what happens.

Juan Valdez is still my homeboy.

It's On!

Well Bjoern and I are signed up to do battle at the Griskus Sprint this July. Right now I'm hoping that he doesn't dust me like he did on Saturday's ride...alla Lance Armstrong. Then again on Saturday's ride it was first time I had touched in almost 2 weeks. Josie nearly got around me as we summited the hill... after I had beaten her up it by nearly 5 minutes a little less than a month ago. I was really suffering. But anyway back to the Griskus Bjoern has me on the bike no doubt about it, but I know I still have the advantage on the swim and a slight advantage on the run ( granted that advantage is mostly due to his injury...in a 5k when he's healthy we're about dead even.) I could take the cowards way out, use the race as a warm up and qualify his win that "I was resting for Providence...blah blah yadda yadda..."excuse. But such a lack of effort would cheapen our mutual competitiveness..I'm going in with my A-game because to beat him I'm going to need it.

So Bjoern it's on...

Boston....

Well Today is Patriots' Day in Mass. and as usual the world's fastest marathoners will embark on a 26.2 mile pilgrimage from Hopkington to the Center of the "City on a Hill." Along the way there will be epic duels and heartbreaking hill, screaming sorority girls, some slack jawed gawkers leaving a Red Sox game, most likely moaning that these freaking runners take too damn long, and why couldn't they take up a real sport like say , Baseball, for instance. Growing up as a runner in New England this is the one race you have burned into your mind from an early age. You hear the stories about people like Bill Rodgers, Joan Benoit, Rodgers Rop,Alberto Salazar the big names of endurance running have made their mark here. Today I know a couple of guys running this thing and hopefully one day have the pleasure or pinning a bib number to my chest and engaging in this thing...but for today...God's Speed Cranky Runner.

Edit # 1: Cranky was through 5k @23:38 on pace for a sub 3:20 marathon! Sorry my math was wrong on the first go round.

Edit# 2 Cranky's through 10k on 3:17 marathon pace.

Edit #3 At 15k Cranky has done 1:10:36
On the elite side of the race a couple of Kenyans have tried to break but Ryan Hall of the US has been hanging tight all day.

Edit #4 Cranky's through 20k...aww screw this race traking on my blog go to the Boton marathon website and use the athlete tracker also watch this thing both the elite races are tight.

Edit #5 Cranky finished in a 3:28...I'm looking forward to his race report. Hopefully one day I'll have my own tale of Boston agony...um... glory to post up here.

The running man returneth....

Well Yesterday I couldn't enjoy the beautiful running weather we had...I was supposed to attend a women's empowerment meeting ( a law class project I have to go a sit in a place where I'm an "outsider".) but I couldn't find the group meeting place I left a message with the head honcho wait she's female so does that mean she' a head honcha? does that mean that this isn't a woman's empowerment group but a womyn's empowerment group. and got no response so there was half an hour I could have been running gone.. then I had a psychology class project ( ie we have to be research participants for grad student projects or write papers...I'm thinking the 10 minutes to fill out a questionnaire trumps having to sit and do research and type.) needless to say the grad student ran a little late so I went to class in my running shorts and I still hadn't run. Prof. let us out early. I was initially going to do campus loops then hit the pool but decided just to run instead and New Britain wasn't looking appealing without a training partner. So I drove back to Wolcott and went to the High School track and did 4 miles. The speed wasn't what I'd like I was averaging just under 8 min. miles, but my training hasn't really been what I'd like. So Last night has kicked off a mini run focus for me. Today 8 miles... and the pool. Saturday Ride then out to Newport and while I'm in RI dinner and a movie with a friend who just happens to be a girl... and I just so happen to be her date to her comencement ball. I figure a nice flat 8-10 miler on Sunday before hauling back to the C to the O to the double N.

Next pay check I need to haul out to Road and Track and pick up some new New Balance trainers for the 09 season, as my 768's are approaching the end of their service life...they have had a good run.. no pun intended...but they're at the end of their road and to continue to put prolonged mileage on them would result in injury. So that is the next major purchase on the equipment horizon. I wish I had some new and exciting stories but right now it's just the same drivel...that will change in about a month.

Enjoy the weather people it's finally spring! ( deepest apologies to my Southern Hemisphere readers where it's autumn.)

The Ides of April.....

Well it has hit. For some of us today is D-day for our annual show down with the IRS. For me it is a day of multiple things becoming unlocked. Entries are open for Ironman New Zealand and they are just about as cheap as last year... Lottery results are announced and I find out if I'm going to Kona via a Golden ticket or if I have to work my way in. I bought my 2009 edition HEAT gear...so once again by finely tuned ass will be decked out Black, White, and Red livery of Connecticut's hottest tri club. Today not much on tap try to get more work done on my thesis. Also since it's supposed to be beautiful try to get a pre class run in. It's days like this I'm left longing for what's coming this summer....Racing....It's what I live for.

R.D.

Edit: Upon checking the lottery results I didn't get in. Looks like I'd better keep training...worst case I'll have more cash tucked aside for IMNZ 2010 edition.

Sorry if I've been away....

Sorry for not blogging much this weekend nothing really happened on the training front and Saturday and Sunday I spent in a cloud of smoke ie doing the altar boy ( one of the kids didn't show up to mass so I got to play with fire and incense Saturday night....and to answer the burning question I did not set my church on fire.)- Eucharistic minister thing for Easter. I could go on a reflective tangent about suffering, pain and redemption, the amazing JC workout plan but I think I covered the full spread last year to read those posts click here and here. My blog is going to be pretty dead over the next couple of weeks as I finish my thesis and other papers so if I go two weeks with out a post ( highly unlikely but still it could happen) I'm not dead although I'll probably be wishing I was as I get the last 40+ pages of my undergraduate college writing career in....and Colombia's coffee futures start growing at an exponential rate. ( note to self Caffeine detox after this semester.)

Yesterday I managed to gather all the sources for one of my papers and it's going to be a good one...religion, politics, genocide...
The thesis well it's dragging out but I'll Get R Done.

Thats it for me.
